Kenneth “Ken” I. Menefee, 71, passed away earlier this month. In 2025, he retired as the Director of Planned Giving at the Indiana State University Foundation, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, service, and dedication to his family and the communities he touched throughout his life.
Born in Key West, Florida, to Jack and Beatrice Menefee, Ken went on to graduate from East Tennessee State University.
Above all, Ken was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and caring brother. He cherished the time spent with those he loved, and his kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family will be remembered always.
Ken enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in healthcare philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, and higher education.
In Terre Haute, Ken established Union Hospital’s foundation, secured initial funding for the Hux Cancer Center, and supported various community healthcare initiatives.
He continued his passion for philanthropy at Indiana State University, where he advanced the university’s mission and expanded educational opportunities before retiring as a proud Sycamore.
“Ken Menefee was a loyal Sycamore, a consummate professional, and a dear friend. During more than a decade at Indiana State University, he raised millions of dollars to support our students, faculty, and programs, leaving a lasting impact on our university community,” said Andrea Angel, Indiana State University Vice President of Advancement and CEO of the Indiana State University Foundation.
“He was a trusted sounding board for our team, always willing to answer questions, share his wisdom, and offer thoughtful advice. Ken’s dedication to Indiana State and the people who make it special was evident in all he did. I will miss him dearly, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside him.”
Beyond his professional career, Ken believed strongly in giving back to the communities he served. He was involved with Rotary for more than 30 years and dedicated his time to numerous charitable organizations, community boards, and fundraising initiatives. His leadership helped establish programs and traditions that continue to benefit others to this day. Ken will be remembered not only for the communities he helped, but for the love, kindness, and generosity he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Susan “Su”; his son, Micheal; his stepson, Keaton; his brothers, Jim, Shawn, and Eric; and his four cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ric.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date.
